We're a Flexible seating learning space!
A little background on flexible seating!
What makes it so popular?
Why is it important?
What's wrong with regular desks?
When I first heard about flexible seating, I'll be the first to admit, I didn't get it! Then I observed in a classroom with it and everything changed. As an educator, there are some lessons that are hard to teach young students like; how to resolve conflicts, how to make choices and how to be a good citizen. Well, in that observation I watched students, on their own, make choices that worked for them. I saw students discussing options for the different areas and I was surprised when I didn't see fighting or arguing about fun seats. Flexible seating, just putting it in a classroom, offers students the opportunity to develop all of these skills without the teacher having to say a word! Most students are new to the idea of having options so we work on building our stamina for using the options and model some respective talk but students ALWAYS surprise and impress me! :) Here are some of the spaces that have worked in our classroom!
